Exercise can help modulate stress and anxiety but being an athlete does not necessarily prevent mental health concerns. Anxiety Disorders are some of the most common mental health concerns for elite athletes. Specifically, student-athletes have additional stressors such as staying on top of classwork and grades.

Luckily in recent years, elite level athletes have been open about seeking treatment. Athletes like Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps, NBA Player Kevin Love, and USWNT Soccer Player Abby Wambach have been speaking out on their personal experiences, redefining “mental toughness” as a state whereby it is okay…. to not be okay. With elite athletes like these it is easier to end the stigma of being weak for seeking help. However, there is still more work to be done.
