Happenstance

Stanford professor and career coach John Krumboltz coined the term “planned happenstance” years ago, but the concept is becoming more applicable than ever in today’s ever-changing job market.  Reflecting on my own trajectory, and speaking with others in Bozeman, illustrations of the theory in action are abundant. Engage your passions The theory deconstructs old school notions, such as: work [...]

Wax On

Martial arts training develops key areas of athletic fitness: strength, speed, agility, flexibility, and stamina. This is especially true of modern Taekwondo, with its noted emphasis on kicking. But did you know that martial arts training is also a good way to become a better skier? A major conditioning factor in martial arts is that training tends to be [...]

“Wouldn’t Tonight be a Nice Night for Ice Cream?”

Anniversaries of loss sometimes have a way of creeping up on us. Often times, around the same time each year, I notice myself getting a little sad or a little grumpy, and I can’t think why… And then at some point it occurs to me that it is once again the anniversary of my mother’s death. Several years after [...]

Why Hard Times Are Actually Good for Us

A recent study on a species of birds, discussed on NPR, suggested that when one generation has abundant resources available for their young, the next generation, lacks work ethic.  Is this a matter of parenting style?  Doesn’t seem to be.  Psychologist Jean Twenge, who authored Generation Me: Why Today's Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled — and More Miserable than [...]

Facebook and our Changing Social World

I’m sure we’ve all been struck, in some form or another, by how much social media (particularly Facebook), is changing our social world.  Two observations (positive and negative) regarding these changes have struck me in particular. Facebook recently reminded me of a book I read several years ago called, “Mutant Message Down Under,” by Marlo Morgan.  One of many [...]

Boundaries with Those You Love (or put up with…)

Setting good boundaries with those you love (or put up with) can sometimes be challenging. People often hit snags because they really care about the other person, and/or they really care what the other person thinks of them. It can help to picture a boundary literally be drawn between the two of you… a divider [...]

Assertiveness is Not Just Being Direct

Ever try being assertive, but feel like you’re ineffectively going in circles?  Some struggle with being more assertive because what they believe is assertiveness is accompanied with guilt.  And so they avoid being assertive until they “just can’t take it any more.”  The pressure cooker releases and the argument with their (spouse, friend, mother, father, boss, whatever) is ugly.  Sometimes they [...]

Parenting your Sailing Siblings

With more than one kid, parenting is no cakewalk.  Not only do you have twice (or triple, or quadruple, or…) the responsibilities, but you’ve got to navigate how to be fair, how to give the right kind of attention, and enough attention.  It can feel fraught with landmines.   Here are five tips for parenting your sailing siblings: Remember [...]

What to do When You’re Winning

I had one of the best high school sailing coaches in the country and one of the best college coaches, but boy, did they ever approach the start of practice differently. My high school coach placed our names on the board in order of where we currently stood on the team. My college coach intentionally put us in random [...]

Sailing Vanguard 15s Upwind in Breeze :  Like a Laser or Like a 420?

There seem to be two schools of thought about sailing V15s upwind in big breeze. V15 sailors often sail other dinghies bef ore jumping into a Vanguard — frequently Lasers or 420s.  I refer to the pinching style of sailing a V15 upwind as “Laser style,” and I refer to the footing style as either “420 style” or, more [...]

How to get through “tough times…”

We’ve all been there: The stakes are high, and this feels like a make-or-break race for you. You have high expectations and you’re revved up and ready to go. Then the tide turns, and the winds aren’t blowing your way…suddenly everything seems tougher. But there’s a lot to be learned from the times when things seem especially hard –including [...]

Control the “controllables!”

There are plenty of “uncontrollables” in sailing… wind direction, current, your competitors’ actions, your competitors’ training, race committee’s choices, and how you finished last race-- are all out of your control. You can hyperfocus on these things, but it’s wasted mental energy! What to focus on Would you take a math test while you’re on Snapchat or Twitter? Similarly, [...]
